Role of Department of Weights and Measures
The government of India has passed laws to ensure that uniform measurement units are used throughout the country. The objectives of the department of Legal Metrology weights and measures are the following:
To check the quality of goods sold in the market,
To check the quantity as specified on outer coverage
To protect consumers' rights and safety and to safeguard their interests
To caution the consumers to use the branded or greeted goods only to act as a mark of purity.
Some seals or stamps like ISI or egg mark are used to save the consumers from unfair trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation; or misleading advertisements.
It is the responsibility of the department of legal metrology weights and measurement. The government of India to implement these laws.
The department checks the way shopkeepers use other measuring instruments and standard weights; they are stamped to certify that they are authentic.
International Organization of Legal Metrology
The Standard of Weights and measurement in 1976 was the first indictment by which the uniform standard of weights and measures based on the metric system was established.
The act is based on the suggestion of the general conference of weights and measures and the international organization of legal metrology.
The 1956 edition was replaced by the comprehensive legislation the standards of weights and measures in 1976.
The act is a result of government efforts to introduce standards for weighing and measuring commodities to protect consumer rights. The standards of weights and measures are administered by the ministry of consumer affairs, food, and public distribution.
